We all want our children to have vibrant, bright smiles! But in reality, many teeth are discolored in appearance. Many parents ask us about the causes of stained teeth and how we can address stains as they occur.
Main causes of staining on teeth:
- Changes from within the tooth
- External factors that stick on or impact the outer enamel appearance
- Developmental factors in how teeth form

External Causes
External factors are common causes of staining, and can include pigmented foods such as berries, soy sauce, dark juices and soda. Chemical exposure such as chlorine, mineral exposure like iron, or buildup of cavity-causing plaque or calculus mineral deposits can also be a factor. Staining due to pigmented foods can often be removed at a dental cleaning (prophylaxis), and while it can often not be removed with a toothbrush and floss, Dr. Villasenor is often able to remove with dental instruments. Iron staining on biting surfaces of molars can not typically be removed, but is not harmful to teeth.
Internal Causes
Internal changes in the structure of the tooth that change the color are often related to previous trauma. This includes either primary (baby) or permanent teeth. It’s important to call our office if your child experiences dental trauma so that we can take radiographs and advise of any treatment needs. Radiographs also help us monitor the injury over time. For permanent teeth with color change, treatment often includes bleaching internally with the help of an endodontist.
Developmental Causes
Developmental changes such as differences in enamel calcification and formation, or the natural difference in opacity of enamel between baby teeth and permanent teeth can contribute to the appearance of staining on teeth. These types of staining will not be removed by a traditional dental cleaning (prophylaxis), and may require restoration or treatment with resin infiltration on permanent teeth with discoloration.
