5 Essential Oral Care Tips
Keeping teeth healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. Dr. Sarah Villasenor and the team at Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry recommend following these simple steps to keep your baby’s smile shining bright!

Oral Care Tips for Infants and Toddlers

1. Brush your baby’s teeth with a soft toothbrush as soon as teeth are visible in the mouth. If you are not able to brush your baby’s teeth twice a day we recommend focusing on nighttime brushing. We believe evening brushing is most important! For additional tips and tricks on how to brush your baby’s teeth check out our blog for tips and tricks.

2. Only give water after nighttime brushing and in between meals. Milk should only be given at mealtimes and we recommend avoiding juice and sodas altogether. This same tip to keep your child’s teeth healthy will also keep the rest of their body healthy!

3. Parents should always brush and floss for children. If your child is interested in brushing their teeth, encouraged them to practice! We recommend that an adult should always have a turn in the evening. This is because your  child’s manual dexterity is still developing through throughout the first few years of their life. One wy to tell that they have developed these skills is when they are able to tie their own shoes or cut up food independently.

4. Aim to offer snacks that don’t get stuck in the teeth and are lower in refined carbohydrates, since these can cause cavities if they sit in the teeth. It is recommended that you establish healthy dietary patterns at a young age since a healthy diet can prevent chronic diseases.
5. Schedule your child’s first pediatric dental visit at age one, and bring them for routine exams every 6 months. This will help their comfort level to grow and set the stage for positive early dental experiences.
