At Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry, we are specialists in providing the best oral health care not only for infants, toddlers, and young children but also for teenagers! This is a really important time to instill good habits in our teenage patients. Since the routines they learn now will carry them into adulthood and involve caring for permanent teeth that need to last for a lifetime. Learn 5 ways to transition your teen to help care for their own oral health.
The 5 Tips for Good Habits:
- Lead by example! You can show your teen that brushing and flossing can fit into a busy lifestyle by making sure that you do these things yourself.
- Stock your home with healthy snack and drink choices. If fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurts, cheese, and other healthy snacks are available, it’s easier for your teen to make a habit out of eating these kinds of foods routinely. They will be more likely to seek healthy foods if these options are part of their routine.
- Schedule routine dental visits for your teen and involve them in making appointments. If they help choose a good time for the appointment around school and activity schedules. It sets the stage for a positive visit. Preventive treatments at dental visits such as fluoride varnish and protective sealants on molars are great.
- Brushing and flossing can be extra challenging if your teen has orthodontic appliances. Involve them in choosing tools to make their routine accessible and efficient. This often includes an electric toothbrush and a variety of flossing tools for home and school.
- Give your teen positive reinforcement for taking ownership of their oral health! You’ve laid the groundwork by teaching healthy habits at home and bringing them for routine visits during childhood. Commend them! Anytime you see them making time for oral hygiene and choosing foods and drinks that keep their smiles healthy and encourage them to feel proud of their efforts!
