Dental Visit at Age one

See a Pediatric Dentist by Age One

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the first dental visit is at age one, or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. This visit is designed to introduce the dentist to your child. We will discuss tips for healthy dietary choices, strategies for keeping your child’s teeth clean at home, and what to do if your child has trauma to his or her mouth.

What does this visit look like?

At this first visit, your child will likely sit in your lap as Dr. Sarah Villasenor uses a toothbrush to brush their teeth and examines their mouth with a mirror. As your child becomes more at ease in our office, we will introduce a more thorough cleaning. We will continue to meet your child where their comfort level is so that dental visits become something to look forward to. We will discuss the appropriate timing for considering dental radiographs. As your child grows, we will evaluate the health of the baby teeth and the development of permanent teeth.

What can you do at this visit to help my baby’s smile stay healthy?

After examining and brushing your child’s teeth, Dr. Sarah Villasenor will offer to apply a fluoride varnish to your child’s teeth. This is a safe way to strengthen your child’s developing smile and prevent cavities!
