We are grateful for your trust in choosing us as your child’s dentist! Whether this is your child’s first dental visit or they have previous dental experience and this is the first visit to our office, our goal is to provide a comfortable visit that will include a thorough exam, teeth cleaning, and discussion of strategies to keep your child’s smile healthy and strong.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children have their first dental appointment at age one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. We will meet your child wherever their comfort level is at and explain the steps of a dental visit in an age-appropriate manner. Our examination will be efficient and thorough, and your visit will include time for you or your child to discuss any concerns with their teeth. It is important for a parent to be present for your child’s first visit so that we can develop strategies together for healthy oral hygiene and dietary routines at home.
How can a parent prepare for their children’s first visit?
The best way to prepare your child for their first dental visit is to talk about it positively at home in the days leading up to the visit. Younger children may benefit from reading stories about positive dental visits, or practicing by checking their stuffed animals’ teeth at home prior to their visit.
For older children who will be visiting our office for the first time, it is important to remind them that you chose to bring them to our office so that we can help make sure their smile stays healthy. It can be helpful to remind your child that it takes a team effort to keep their mouth healthy and strong- their own efforts brushing and flossing, your help as parent with oral hygiene routines and guidance toward a healthy diet, and our office as your kind and gentle pediatric dental specialists.
By presenting discussions positively ahead of the first appointment at our office, you’ll help your child to enjoy their dental visit and set them up for a lifetime of oral health!
