Sensitive teeth in kids

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

We often hear our patients complain of sensitive teeth. The best way to experience relief from teeth sensetivity for kids depends on what is causing the sensitivity. Some of the most common reasons that teeth can feel sensitive can include outer enamel that does not form ideally hard and strong, cavities, plaque on teeth, or new permanent front teeth can often be sensitive in young people for the first few years that they are present in the mouth, when the nerve area is largest.

Prevention and Treatment

At Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Villasenor emphasizes the importance of good oral hygiene with brushing and flossing to prevent cavities or plaque buildup on teeth, which can make teeth and gums feel sensitive. She offers preventive services such as fluoride varnish that not only help to prevent cavities, but also minimizes sensitivity in teeth. Dr. Villasenor does not recommend that pediatric patients bleach their teeth, as this can cause increased sensitivity.

Some prescription toothpastes such as Sensodyne Pronamel can be used to decrease sensitivity, but it sometimes takes a couple weeks to see results. The most intuitive but effective way to minimize dental sensitivity is to avoid trigger foods or drinks. The most common trigger foods we see are ice cream and ice. If your child is experiencing sensitivity, schedule an appointment today at Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry to talk with Dr. Villasenor about treatment options for their specific needs.
