At Rise and Shine Pediatric Dentistry, we are passionate about prevention and believe that every child should have an individualized plan for oral homecare that is based on their risk for cavities. For children who have a high risk for cavities, Dr. Villasenor may recommend additional steps beyond brushing twice and flossing once with a parent’s help. Using toothpaste with a higher fluoride content, such as JustRight5000, can prevent and reverse early tooth decay. This toothpaste is available for purchase in our office and is easy to use, thanks to its dose-metered pump design that lasts 6 months. When fluoride along isn’t enough, Dr. Villasenor may recommend using Povi-One, an oral iodine treatment that is applied both in the office and at home to treat and reduce aggressive cavity causing bacteria
If your child has signs of early cavities starting, such as white spots on the smooth surfaces of their teeth, staining in the deep grooves on the biting surfaces of teeth, or small cavities within the outer layer of the tooth noted on a radiograph, they may be a candidate for additional conservative management techniques. Curodont is a bioactive treatment that can reverse early cavities without removal of any tooth structure. Preventive sealants can be applied to areas of occlusal staining that are at a high risk for cavities. Silver diamine fluoride can be applied to early cavities in the outer layer of the tooth in order to slow the progression of the cavity.
